Children's book authors Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff's most beloved elephant comes to the big screen in this animated family tale. Elephant monarch King Babar tells the tale, that unfolds via flashback, of how a much-younger Barbar and his girlfriend Celeste save her village from the pugnacious rhinoceroses that have come to raid it.

Following his conquest of India, Emperor Babar faces a crisis of loyalty among his troops and nobles. His most devoted subject, Sardar Sheikh, faces a dilemma when his daughter, Hamida, falls in love with Prince Humayun. Sheikh sends Hamida away, prompting Babar to intervene. However, a great sacrifice is ultimately demanded of the Emperor to save his son and reconcile the conflict.

Babar is a young elephant in the great forest. Whilst out with his mother a hunter kills his mother and he flees to escape the same fate. He eventually finds himself in a human city and experiences the many differences between city and forest life. Treated as an outsider he is taken in by an elderly woman, dressed in fancy suits, taught to write and count and is brought up in human culture.

The Movie Movie shows how the camera, editing techniques, make-up and sound can be used in film and video to deliberately manipulate our perceptions and emotions. Drama, action and slapstick humour are combined in a simple, family-oriented plot. There is no dialogue, but there is an explanatory song. Behind-the-scenes vignettes highlight the message that in a movie everything is not quite as it seems.

After his mother is killed by a hunter, Babar avoids capture by escaping to the city, where he is befriended by the kindly Old Lady. Later, with cousins Celeste and Arthur, he returns to the great forest to be crowned King of the Elephants.

Babar Naam Gandhiji is about Mahatma Gandhi and modern society through the eyes of street child. The film is based around a boy named Kencho, who has an encounter with the Father of the Nation through a currency note with Gandhiji's photo on it. The curious boy is adopted by an NGO and is taught the ideals of Gandhiji.
